Support for Windows 8.1 will end on January 10, 2023, so Microsoft urges users to take action.
While Microsoft is still struggling to seduce users with Windows 11, the firm is continuing to retire previous versions of its operating system. After Windows 7 in early 2020, it will soon be the turn of the unloved Windows 8.1 to bow out. In any case, if it will still be possible to use a PC powered by this OS, its extended support will be stopped on January 23, 2023. Its classic support has already ended since January 9, 2018.
Metro and Sleep for Windows 8.1
Concretely, no more software updates, security or correction patches or technical support will be offered from this date. The few users and companies still on Windows 8 and 8.1, which today represent 4.4% of Windows PCs connected to the Internet according to StatCounter (3.06% for Windows 8.1 and 1.36% for Windows 8), s will therefore be exposed to potential viral infections.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft invites those concerned to migrate to Windows 11. However, it will be necessary to pay for a license, but also that the machine concerned has the minimum technical specifications required. Otherwise, it will be necessary to change it or study the Windows 10 track. This version will be supported until October 14, 2025.
A version to save the furniture
Released at the end of 2013 to try to correct the many faults of Windows 8 (strongly shunned after Windows 7), including the Metro interface, version 8.1 notably improved various elements. The start screen was particularly concerned and could not be displayed when switched on, while Windows 8.1 will mainly introduce Internet Explorer 11, a unified search system based on Bing and support for different technologies such as WiFi Direct, Miracast or the ReFS filesystem again.
